From ‘Knock’ to ‘Smart’: ‘똑’ in Korean

Do you know how to describe this sound in Korean? In Korea, we perceive this sound of lightly tapping a hard object as ‘똑똑’.

Since this sound is short and crisp rather than long and dragging, over time, this sound became associated with actions or states that are ‘clear,’ ‘neat,’ and ‘distinct.’ Today, I’ll show you four common everyday expressions using this ‘똑’.”

First, you probably know ‘똑똑하다’ means ‘to be smart.’ But there’s another related expression: ‘똑 소리 나다’.

  • 조이는 한국어를 똑 소리 나게 가르쳐요. – Joy teaches Korean in a very clear and professional way.
  • 우리 아내는 정말 똑 소리 나는 여자예요! – My wife is a very smart and capable woman!

When you describe someone as a ‘똑 소리 나는 사람’, it means they handle things neatly and clearly without any unnecessary fluff. While it implies they are smart, it’s mostly used to describe their efficient and precise way of working.

Next is ‘똑같다’. You likely learned this in Level 2. Koreans actually use ‘똑같다’ much more often than just ‘같다’ in daily life. Here, ‘똑’ acted like an adverb meaning ‘clearly’ or ‘exactly,’ but now it has become one solid word.

  • 어, 제 거랑 똑같아요! Oh, it’s exactly the same as mine!
  • 저랑 똑같은 폰 쓰시네요! – You’re using the exact same phone as me!

Third: 똑똑히. As you might guess from words like ‘열심히’ or ‘조용히’, ‘-히’ is an adverb-forming suffix. ‘똑똑히’ means ‘clearly’ or ‘distinctly.’

  • 제가 어제 이 사람 똑똑히 봤어요. – I saw this person clearly yesterday.
  • 죄송해요. 똑똑히 기억이 안 나요. – I’m sorry. I don’t remember clearly.

Fourth: 똑바로.’바로’ means straight, upright, or honestly. When we combine it with ‘똑’, it becomes ‘똑바로’. Just like ‘똑같다,’ we use ‘똑바로’ much more frequently than just ‘바로.’ Maybe it’s because ‘똑’ adds that extra emphasis of ‘clarity.’

  • 기사님, 이 길로 똑바로 가 주세요. – Driver, please go straight down this road.
  • 거짓말하지 말고 똑바로 말해. – Don’t lie and speak straight/honestly.

It’s amazing how a simple tapping sound can turn into so many useful expressions, right?
