Korean ㄱ vs. ㄲ — What is the difference?

가치 (value) vs. 까치 (magpie)

Can you hear the difference?

The only difference is that “가치” begins with “ㄱ” while “까치” begins with “ㄲ.”

“ㄲ” is a tensed sound.

You press your tongue firmly against the soft palate, then release it.

One tiny sound changes — so does the meaning.

English doesn’t have a direct equivalent to the consonant ㄲ.

But there is a similar tension in words like: tricky, pickle, and make-up.

When you say tricky, that /k/ in the middle isn’t the final sound, but still gets pronounced clearly.

Because “trick” and “-y” are two separate parts, to keep the meaning, you build tension, then release it.

so try it. Not louder, but tighter.

  • 가치 (value) vs. 까치 (magpie)
  • 가요 (to go) vs. 까요 (to peel)
  • 고리 (ring) vs. 꼬리 (tail)

Practice more. You’ll speak more clearly and be understood more easily.
