이, 그, 저: Verbs & Adjectives Explained

You know 이, 그, and 저, right?

They always need a partner. You’ve used them with nouns, but did you know they have verb and adjective versions too?

Let’s level up your Korean.

First, the verbs! 이러다, 저러다, 그러다. These describe acting or doing a certain way.

이러다
  • 저는 원래 이럽니다. / 저는 원래 이래요.
(I’m usually like this. / I always act this way.)
  • 왜 이러는 거예요?
(Why are you acting like this? / Why are you doing this?)
저러다
  • 저 사람은 자주 저럽니다. / 저 사람은 자주 저래요.
(That person often acts like that.)
  • 왜 저러는 거예요?
(Why is that person acting like that? / Why is he/she doing that?)
그러다
  • 그러지 마세요.
(Please don’t do that. / Please don’t act that way.)
  • 누가 그럽니까? / 누가 그래요?
(Who says that? / Who does that?)

Now, the adjectives! 이렇다, 저렇다, 그렇다. These describe a state or quality.

이렇다
  • 저는 원래 이렇습니다. / 저는 원래 이래요.
    (I’m usually like this (as a person/thing).)
  • 저는 원래 이런 사람이에요.
(I am this kind of person by nature. / I’m normally like this.)
저렇다
  • 한국은 보통 저렇습니다. / 한국은 보통 저래요.
(Korea is usually like that. / That’s typically the way things are in Korea.)
  • 저런 거 싫어요.
(I don’t like things like that. / I dislike stuff like that.)
그렇다
  • 그렇게 맛있어요?
(Is it really that delicious? / Is it that good?)
  • 제 기분요? 그냥 그래요. / 그냥 그렇습니다.
    (My mood? It’s so-so. / It’s just alright.)
