Expressions with “나다”

Senses: Touch, Taste, See, Hear, Feel

  • 소리가 나다 – for sound to come out, to sound
    • 저 방에서 소리 나요. – I hear some sound from that room.
  • 냄새가 나다 – for smell to come out, to smell
    • 이 양말에서 나쁜 냄새가 나요. – This sock smells bad.
  • 입냄새가 나다 [임냄새] – for bad breath to come out
    • 그 분은 입냄새가 많이 나요. – The person has a bad breath.
  • 빛이 나다 – for lights to occur, to shine, to sparkle
    • 다이아몬드가 빛이 나요. – The diamond is shining.
  • 맛이 나다 – for a taste to occur, to be tasty
    • 이 스프 정말 맛 나네요! [만나네요] – This soup is very tasty!
    • 정말 이상한 맛이 나요. – It tastes really weird.
  • 광택이 나다 / 윤기가 나다 – to glow
    • 피부가 부드럽고 광택이 나네요. – My skin is smooth and glowing.
  • 모양이 나다 – to look good
    • 약간 모양이 안 나긴 하지만 이렇게 섞어 주세요. – It might not look as good, but you just have to mix it like this.
  • 힘이 나다 – to become heightened in spirits, to take fresh heart
    • 이게 널 힘나게 하지 않니? – Doesn’t this just cheer you up?
  • 표가 나다 / 티가 나다 – for signs to be shown
    • 표정이랑 목소리에서 다 티 나요. – It was all over your face and in your voice.
    • 가격이 얼마짜리인지 모르겠지만 조금 싼 티가 나는군요. – I didn’t know how much it cost but it looks so cheap.
  • 용기가 나다 – to be brave
    • 나는 그게 문제라고 할 용기가 안 났어. – I didn’t have the heart to mention it as a problem.
  • 욕심이 나다 / 탐이 나다 – to crave
    • 맛있는 게 너무 많으니까 욕심 나요. – Everything’s so good that I got greedy.

Emotions

  • 화가 나다 – for anger to occur, to be angry
    • 화가 많이 나요. – I’m very angry.
    • 제가 오늘도 지각해서 부장님이 되게 화 나셨어요.- The department head was very angry because I was late today again.
  • 짜증이 나다 – for annoyance to occur, to be annoyed
    • 지금 너무 짜증 나요. – I’m very annoyed right now.
    • 늦게 오는 친구 때문에 짜증 났어요. – I was annoyed because my friend came out late.
  • 성질이 나다 – for one’s personality or character to come out
    • 제발 성질 나게 하지 마. – Please don’t make me angry.
  • 싫증이 나다 [실쯩] – for a tiredness to occur
    • 김밥에 싫증 났어요. – I became tired in Kimbab.
    • 샌드위치를 매일 먹으니까 싫증 나네요. – I’m tired of sandwiches because I ate them everyday.
  • 겁이 나다 – for fear to occur
    • 저는 어두운 곳에서 겁이 나요. – I have fear in dark.

Ailments / Symptoms

  • 열이 나다 – for a fever to occur
    • 열 나요. – I have a fever.
  • 기침이 나다 – for a cough to occur
    • 하루종일 기침 나요. – I’ve been coughing all day.
  • 탈이 나다 – for a disease to occur
    • 너무 많이 먹어서 배에 탈이 났어요. – I have a stomachache because I ate too much.
      = 너무 많이 먹어서 배탈 났어요.
    • 배탈이 났으니까 약 먹어야겠어요. – I should take some medicine because I have indigestion.
  • 현기증이 나다 – for dizziness to occur, to feel dizzy
    • 현기증 나요. – I feel dizzy.
    • 더운 날씨에 밖에 오래 서 있으니까 현기증 나요. – I feel dizzy from standing in the hot weather for a long time.
  • 병이 나다 – to become sick
    • 안 쉬고 일하다가 병 났어요. – I became sick while working because I did not rest.
  • 멀미가 나다 – to have motion sickness
    • 자동차 타서 멀미 났어요. – I became carsick in the car.

Cognitions

  • 기억이 나다 – for one’s memory to occur, to remember
    • 아! 기억 났어요! [기엉나써요] – Ah! I remember that!
    • 갑자기 그 사람 이름이 기억 났어요. – I suddenly remembered that person’s name.
  • 생각이 나다 – for a thought to occur
    • 저 사람 어디서 만났는지 생각 났어요. [만난는지 생강나써요] – It just came to me where I met that person.
  • 이름이 나다 – for the name to appear, to be famous
    • 여기 이름 난 집이야. – This restaurant is a famous one.

Emergences

  • 피가 나다 – for blood to come out
    • 손에(서) 피 나요. – My hand is bleeding.
    • 코에(서) 피 나요. – My nose is bleeding.
  • 코피가 나다 – for nose-blood to come out
  • 콧물이 나다 [콘물] – for nose-water to come out
    • 저 콧물 나요. – I have a runny nose.
  • 눈물이 나다 – for tear to come out
    • 저 눈물 나요. – My eyes are tearing up. / I’m crying.
  • 두드러기가 나다 – for rashes to occur
    • 왼팔에 두드러기 났어요. – I have rashes on my left arm.
  • 땀이 나다 – for sweat to come out, to sweat
    • 땀 많이 나요. – I am sweating a lot.
  • 표가 나다 (=티가 나다) – for a sign/mark to appear
    • 수잔은 거짓말을 하면 얼굴에 표가 나요. – When Susan lies, her face shows that she lied.
  • 자국이 나다 – for a mark to appear, to stain
    • 길에 타이어 자국이 났어요. – Track marks appeared on the street.

Occurences

  • 상처가 나다 – for a wound to occur
    • 넘어져서 다리에 상처 났어요. – I fell and hurt my leg.
  • 구멍이 나다 – for a hole to appear
    • 아끼는 치마에 구멍이 났어요. – I have a hole on my favorite skirt.
  • 고장이 나다 – for a failure to occur, to be broke (for machines)
    • 제 컴퓨터 고장 났어요. – My computer is broken.
  • 사고가 나다 – for an accident to happen
    • 사거리에서 교통사고가 났어요. – An accident happened at the intersection.
  • 불이 나다 – for a fire to break out
    • 한 시간 전에 건물에 불이 났어요. – A fire broke out in the building an hour ago.
  • 전쟁이 나다 – for a war to break out
    • 중동에서 전쟁이 났어요. – A war broke out in the Middle East.
  • 지진이 나다 – for an earthquake to happen
    • 어제 섬에서 지진 났어요. – There was an earthquake on the island yesterday.
  • 홍수가 나다 – for a flood to happen
    • 비가 너무 많이 와서 홍수 났어요. – It rained so much that there was a flood.
  • 가뭄이 나다 – for a drougt to happen
    • 오랫동안 비가 안 와서 가뭄이 났어요. – A drougt happened because there was no rain for a long time.
  • 결판이 나다 – for a decision to be made, to come to an end/conslusion, to be settled
    • 그 싸움 아직 결판 안 났어요. – The quarrel has not yet been settled.
  • 박살이 나다 / 토막이 나다 / 조각이 나다 – to be broken into shivers/pieces
    • 나 교통사고 나서 내가 박살 났어. – I smashed up the car.
  • 시간이 나다 – to be free
    • 시간 날 때 전화 해. – Call me when you’re free.
    • 나는 시간 날 때마다 술 마셔. – I drink every chance I get.
    • 다음 주말에 시간 날 것 같아요. – I might be free next weekend.
  • 끝장이 나다 – to end, to come to an end
    • 내가 말했잖아. 난 끝장이야. – I told you I’m dead.
    • 한 달 후에 그 회사는 끝장이 났다. – A month later, the company goes kaput.
