[Alive vs Not 6] 4 “OPEN” you must know in Korean

We learned how to “close” last time, but “open” is a bit different. It’s not just about being alive or not. It depends on the object. I’m sorry in advance, because there are four of them!

First, 열다. This is your to-go for most inanimate objects.
So, you can say:

  • 창문 좀 열어 주세요. – Please open the window.
– I opened the lipstick cap.

Remember how eyes had a special “close”? They have a special “open” too. It’s 뜨다. It practically exists just for eyes!

– Open your eyes.

Third is 펴다. Use this when you’re unfolding something or making it flat.

– Open the book.
– Open/Unclench your hand.
– I want to smooth out my wrinkles.

Finally, 벌리다. This is for widening the gap between two things that were close together.

– Spread your fingers.
– Open your mouth.
– Please split the chopsticks apart.

So, which one do you find the most confusing?
