We’ve seen the many faces of ‘-도’ so far. Let’s see how this small particle grows into a bigger grammar pattern.

Remember how ‘-도’ can mean “even” in surprising situations? Because of the nuance, it started attaching itself to adverbs and connective endings to express the speaker’s personal attitude or subtle feelings.

For example:

• 우리 아이가 많이도 먹어요. (My child eats so much!)
• 우리 아이가 잘도 먹어요. (My child eats quite well!)

Here, ‘-도’ is attached to adverbs like “많이” and “잘”. It simply adds emphasis. But because of this “extra” emphasis, it’s often used sarcastically to tease someone:

• 변명을 잘도 하는구나! – You’re really good at making excuses!
• 빨리도 오셨네요! – You sure arrived quickly!

‘-도’ also loves sticking to the connective ending ‘-아/-어.’ Over time, this became a fixed grammar pattern: “-아/-어 도.”

“천천히 오셔도 문제 없어요.” It was originally “천천히 오셔도 문제 없고, 빨리 오셔도 문제 없어요.” (Whether you come slowly or quickly, there is no problem.)

But since coming late is usually the “problematic” case in life, we dropped the “quickly” part.

Now, ‘천천히 오셔도’ remains, and ‘-도’ turns into ‘even if’ or ‘although.’

We can make this even shorter:

• 천천히 오셔도 괜찮아요.
• 천천히 오셔도 돼요. 

Wait, what does “되다” mean here? Don’t translate it as “to become.” In this context, it means “to be fine” or “to work properly.” As I’ve mentioned in my previous verb series, “되다” describes the situation itself. 

Think of it this way. When a cashier says, “이 카드 안 돼요,” they mean: ‘This card isn’t working.’

And imagine a child asking for chocolate, but the mom says “안 돼.” She’s basically saying: ‘The situation—your health, or your unfinished homework—doesn’t allow it.’

That’s why Koreans use “되다” for almost everything! It’s all about whether the situation is ‘Good to go’ or not.

So, “-아/-어도 되다” literally means: “Even if you do this, the situation is fine.” “-아/-어도 안 되다” would be: “Even if you do this, the situation does not allow it.”

Since this pattern is so often used for asking or giving permission, most textbooks just teach the whole chunk, ‘-아/-어도 되다’, as ‘You may’ or ‘You can.’ So, ‘천천히 오셔도 돼요’ is usually translated as ‘You may come slowly.’
