Do you know how to say ‘You’re funny’ in Korean? It would be easy for me to just give you the phrase, but I want to help you understand why we say it that way so you can use it correctly.

First, let’s learn the verb ‘웃다’.
This describes the action of expressing joy through facial expressions or sounds—basically, it corresponds to ‘to laugh’ in English. It’s an intransitive verb, so it’s very simple:

• 왜 웃으세요? – Why are you laughing?
• 뭐 때문에 그렇게 웃어? – What are you laughing at like that?
• 자꾸 웃지 마세요. – Please stop laughing.

Now, what about ‘funny’? This is where we use the causative verb ‘웃기다’, which literally means ‘to make someone laugh.’ While English uses the adjective ‘funny,’ Korean uses this verb in the present tense to describe someone who generally makes people laugh:

• 우리 아빠 진짜 웃겨요. – My dad is really funny.
• 너 엄청 웃긴다! – You’re so funny!

‘웃기다’ can be used sarcastically. So be mindful of your tone and context! If you want to use it before a noun, you can use ‘웃긴’ or ‘웃기는’.

• 제 친구는 정말 웃긴 사람이에요.
• 제 친구는 정말 웃기는 사람이에요.

Both are grammatically correct, but to be honest, just saying ‘제 친구는 정말 웃겨요’ is much more common.
To a native ear, calling someone a ‘웃긴 사람’ or ‘웃기는 사람’ can sometimes sound like you are looking down on them. It’s not very respectful.

However, these forms work perfectly with non-human nouns:

• 내가 웃긴 얘기 하나 해 줄까? – Shall I tell you a funny story?
• 진짜 웃기는 거 있는데, 들어 볼래요? – There’s something really funny, want to hear it?
• 어제 엄청 웃긴 일 있었어. – Something really funny happened yesterday.
