What does “몸살” actually mean in Korean?

Have you ever heard a Korean says, “나 몸살 났어”?

For a long time, I felt so frustrated because I couldn’t find a perfect English translation for this word. I realized it’s because I didn’t fully understand what “몸살” actually meant in Korean. So, I did some research!

Usually, when Koreans say “나 몸살 났어,” they mean that awful feeling when your body just hurts all over. You might have a fever, a headache, nausea, muscle aches, or fatigue—all at once.

Because there is no single English word for this combination, I’ve always just translated it as: “I’m sick.”

So, where does the word come from?

To be honest, the exact origin is still unclear. But generally, “살” means flesh and muscles.

And Koreans also used the word “살” to describe a negative force, a curse, or evil energy entering the body. So, “몸살” might literally mean “bad energy inside the body.”

We don’t know for sure, but looking at how terrible it feels, it definitely makes sense! Either way, when a Korean says “나 몸살 났어,” it means their entire body is aching and exhausted.
