[Q&A] Voiced & Unvoiced in Korean

This Q&A Video is a spin-off from this content.

이 댓글을 주신 분이 한국어 학습자일지도 모르니까, 노파심에 제가 사랑을 담아서 설명을 드릴게요.
Since the person who left this comment might be a Korean learner, out of care and concern, I will explain with love.

말씀 드렸듯이 한국어에는 무성음과 유성음의 구별이 없습니다.
As I mentioned, in Korean, there is no distinction between unvoiced and voiced sounds.

그렇기 때문에 기식성 여부(기식이 있는지 없는지)로 한국어 단어의 의미를 가를 수 없습니다.
Therefore, you cannot distinguish the meaning of Korean words by the presence of aspiration.

몇 가지 예를 들어 드릴게요.
Let me give you a few examples.

부부. 이거 어떻게 들리세요?
“부부 (married couple). ” How does this sound to you?

한국인한테는 두 음절 모두 같은 소리로 들리는데,
To Koreans, both syllables sound like the same sound,

기식성을 구별하는 언어권의 사람들한테는 각각 다른 소리로 들릴 가능성이 높아요.
but to people from language backgrounds that distinguish aspiration/voicing, there is a high chance they sound different.

왜냐하면 우리가 첫번째 ㅂ 소리를 낼 때는 성대가 전혀 울리지 않는 상태에서 입술만 움직여서 소리를 먼저 내기 때문에 ㅂ이 무성음으로 들립니다.
Because when we make the first ‘ㅂ’ sound, we make the sound first by moving only our lips without the vocal cords vibrating at all, so ‘ㅂ’ sounds voiceless.

그런데 모음 같이 성대를 울려서 내는 소리인 모음이 발음된 다음에 나는 ㅂ은 유성음으로 들립니다.
However, the ‘ㅂ’ that comes after a vowel, which is a sound produced by vibrating the vocal cords, is pronounced, it sounds voiced.

다른 파열음인 ㄱ, ㄷ, ㅂ 모두 다 그렇게 됩니다.
Other plosives like ‘ㄱ’, ‘ㄷ’, and ‘ㅂ’ all work like that.

다시 들려 드릴게요.
Let me pronounce them for you again.

  • 부부 (married couple)
  • 두부 (tofu)
  • 건너 (across)
  • 당근 (carrot)
  • 다리 (bridge/leg)
  • 강당 (auditorium)
