[Hanja] 왕 (王)과 옥 (玉): King and Jewel

It means “king.” While the exact origin of its shape is a bit of a mystery to me, here’s a fun fact. If you add just one tiny dot to this character, it becomes 옥(玉), which means ‘jade’ or ‘jewel.’

Today, let’s look at some common Sino-Korean words using 왕(王) and 옥(玉).

  • 왕 (王) – king
  • 왕후 (王后) / 왕비 (王妃) – queen consort
