This hanja means “self” or “personal.” There are so many hanja that are pronounced as “자,” and this is one of them. It is used in so many different words, but since I don’t know who among you is a beginner, intermediate, or advanced learner, I’ll just introduce a few essential and frequently used ones.
- 자신감 (自信感) – self-assurance, confidence
- 자기소개 (自己紹介) – self-introduction
- 자동차 (自動車) – car, automobile
- 자연 (自然) – nature
- 자유 (自由) – freedom
- 자동문 (自動門) – automatic door
- 자존심 (自尊心) – pride, self-respect
- 자취방 (自炊房) – a room where one lives away from one’s family, rented room for oneself
- 자아 (自我) – ego
