The Adjective 답답하다

Let’s learn the adjective 답답하다.

I think 답답하다 can be the opposite of the word 시원하다 that we covered before. It describes that unpleasant, uncomfortable feeling when something is clogged or stuffed.

When you have something you really want to say on the tip of your tongue, but you just can’t remember it, or when you’re in a situation where you simply cannot speak your mind. That frustrated, pent-up feeling is expressed in Korean as “답답해!”

We also use 답답하다 to express a complex mix of feelings. Annoyance, worry, and a bit of anger, when a problem remains unresolved for a long time without the results you want, or when there is no immediate solution in sight.

On top of these emotions, 답답하다 is also widely used for physical environments. For example, like the recent summer weather in Korea, when the air is super humid, hot, and suffocating, making it hard to breathe easily. You can say “공기 너무 답답해. (The air is too stuffy.)” You can also use it when you are in a cramped, crowded space with no fresh air.

Personally, I find myself using 답답하다 whenever the speed of something is just too slow! When my mind freezes and thoughts don’t come fast enough, I feel 답답해요. When a taxi drives way too slowly, I feel 답답해요. And when the elevator doors take forever to close, I feel 답답해요!
