이거는 이것저것 연결된 게 많아서 짧은 비디오로 만들기가 힘든 주제인데요,
This is a topic that is difficult to make into a short video because it has many things connected to it,
그래도 댓글이 너무 많이 달려서 최대한 짧게 얘기해 볼게요.
but since I get so many comments, I will try to talk about it as briefly as possible.
기본적으로 “먹기”와 “먹는 것”은 명사구입니다.
Basically, “먹기” and “먹는 것” are noun phrases.
그런데 “먹기”는 동사만으로만 이루어진 만든 명사구이고,
However, “먹기” is a noun phrase made up of only a verb,
“먹는 것”은 기본적으로 “것”이라는 의존명사를 “먹-”이라는 동사 뿌리에 pre-noun forming ending “-는”을 붙여서 만든 더 복잡한 구조를 가진 명사구예요.
and “먹는 것” is basically a noun phrase with a more complex structure, made by attaching the pre-noun forming ending ‘-는’ to the verb root ‘먹-‘ along with the dependent noun ‘것’.
다시 말하면 “먹기”는 사전에는 없지만 문법적으로 만든 동작 명사이고,
In other words, “먹기” is an action noun made grammatically although it is not in the dictionary,
“먹는 것”은 “것”이라는 의존 명사의 태생적인 이유로 동작 명사인지 아닌지는 전적으로 대화 상황에 달렸습니다.
and whether “먹는 것” is an action noun or not entirely depends on the conversational context, due to the inherent nature of the dependent noun ‘것’.
여러분 아시잖아요. “것”은 앞에 무슨 말이 오는지에 따라 항상 뜻이 달라져요.
As you know, the meaning of “것” always changes depending on what word comes before it.
여러분이 가장 먼저 배우는 말들 중에 “이것, 저것, 그것”이 다 같은 말은 아니죠?
Among the words you learn first, “이것, 저것, 그것” are not all the same words, right?
Pre-noun forming ending ‘는’은 일반화의 오류를 무릅쓰고 간단하게 말하면 진행시제와 비슷한 맥락이 있습니다.
The pre-noun forming ending ‘-는’, to put it simply at the risk of hasty generalization, shares a similar context with the progressive tense.
그런 점에서 “먹기”와 “먹는 것”이 모두 eating으로 번역될 여지가 다분한 거고요.
In that sense, there is plenty of room for both “먹기” and “먹는 것” to be translated as ‘eating’.
얘기가 계속 길어지는데… 여러분이 가장 의문점을 가지는 “먹는 것”의 번역의 예를 들자면,
The story keeps getting longer… but to give an example of the translation of “먹는 것” that you wonder about most,
“이거 먹는 거예요?”라는 말은 “Is it edible?”이라는 뜻입니다.
The phrase “이거 먹는 거예요?” means “Is it edible?”.
이때 “먹는 거”의 “-는”은 언제나 먹을 수 있는 거라는 의미에서 쓰인 건데, 진행시제는 실제로 영어에서도 쓰는 개념이에요.
In this case, ‘-는’ in “먹는 거” is used in the sense of something that can always be eaten, and the progressive tense is actually a concept used in English too.
예를 들면 “Korean people are very demanding.”에서 demand가 동사가 아니라 그냥 이 사람들이 일반적으로 그런 상태라는 의미로 쓰였기 때문에 사실 형용사죠.
For example, in “Korean people are very demanding.”, ‘demanding’ is not progressive, but it’s used to mean that these people are generally in that state, so it is actually an adjective.
아마 이런식으로 쓰이다가 현대 영어에서는 (demanding이) 형용사가 된 걸 거예요.
It was probably used like this and then became an adjective in modern English.
그럼 이건 어때요?
Then how about this?
“떡국은 설날에 먹는 거예요.”에서 “먹는 거”가 eating thing이 아닙니다.
In “떡국은 설날에 먹는 거예요.”, “먹는 거” is not ‘eating thing’.
“는 것”절은 보통 동사로만 만드는 게 아니라 더 단위가 큰 명사절입니다.
A ‘-는 것’ clause is usually not just made with a verb, but is a noun clause with a larger unit.
영어에서는 relative pronouns가 있어서 “떡국 is what we eat on 설날.”이라고 간단히 명사로만 문장 구성을 한다음에 자세한 정보는 명사 뒤로 연결만 하면 되는데 한국어는 모든 자세한 정보가 명사 앞에 옵니다.
In English, there are relative pronouns, so after simply constructing a sentence with nouns like “떡국 is what we eat on 설날.”, you just connect detailed information behind the noun, but in Korean, all detailed information comes before the noun.
