한국어에도 “플러팅”이라는 표현을 쓰는 걸 들은 적은 있는데,
I’ve heard the expression “플러팅” being used in Korean too,
제가 이미 결혼한 아줌마라서 그런 것들에 대해서는 정확하게 잘 몰라요.
but since I’m already an 아줌마 (married woman), I don’t know about those things accurately.
근데 우선 제가 아는 선에서 말씀 드리자면, 이렇습니다.
But first, to tell you as far as I know, it’s like this.
한국어에서 “썸”이라고 하면 이게 영어의 “Something”에서 온 말이고요,
In Korean, when we say “썸”, this comes from the English word “something”,
제가 대학 다닐 때도 쓰던 말인데,
and it’s a term I used even when I was in college,
이게 서로 정확히 애인 사이는 아니지만 “Something,”
where I remember using it to refer to a relationship or a partner where you’re not exactly lovers, but there is “something.”
그러니까 둘 사이에 “뭐”가 있기는 있는 그런 관계나 상대방을 의미하는 걸로 그렇게 썼던 걸로 기억해요.
That is, “something” going on between the two.
“썸”이라고 하면 남자인지 여자인지 모르니까 “썸남”, “썸녀”라고 부르기 시작했고요.
Since you can’t tell whether it’s a man or a woman just by “썸”, people started calling them “썸남” and “썸녀.”
그리고 한국어에서 “썸”은 타는 겁니다.
And in Korean, you “flow (타다)” a 썸.
버스나 지하철만 타는 게 아니고 썸도 탑니다.
You don’t just “ride (타다)” the bus or subway, you also “flow (타다)” a 썸.
그래서 “나 걔랑 썸 타는 중이야.”라고 하면 둘이 사귀는 사이는 아니지만 뭔가 쟤도 나를 좋아하는 것 같고, 나도 걔를 좋아하는 것 같은,
So when you say “나 걔랑 썸 타는 중이야 (I’m having a ‘some’ with him/her.)”, the two aren’t dating, but it feels like he/she likes me and I like him/her,
영어권에서는 이거를 situationship이라고 말하는 걸 들은 것 같은데 아마 맞을 거예요.
I think I heard that in English-speaking countries this is called a ‘situationship’, which is probably right.
그리고 flirting이랑 한국어의 “플러팅”이 같은 의미로 쓰이는지는 모르겠는데, 제 생각에는 “썸”이랑 약간 다른 것 같아요.
And while I don’t know if ‘flirting’ and Korean “플러팅” share the exact same meaning, in my opinion, it seems a bit different from “썸”.
왜냐하면 제 인생에서 몇몇의 남자들이 저한테 “플러팅”을 한 적이 있었던 것 같은데, 이게 “썸”은 확실히 아닌 것 같거든요.
Because I think a few men have “flirted” with me in my life, but that definitely didn’t seem to be a “썸”.
예를 들면 상대방이 저를 좋아한다는 가정 하에 저한테 이런 말을 해요 “오늘 밤에 꿈에서 보자!”
For example, under the assumption that the person likes me, that person says this to me: “See you in my dreams tonight!”
만약에 상대방이 이런 말을 하면 저는 부정적인 반응을 하는 걸로 제 마음을 좀 표현을 할 것 같아요. 나는 너를 좋아하지 않는다.
If the other person says something like that, I think I’d express my feelings by giving a negative reaction: “I don’t like you.”
그리고 말이 나온 김에, 이게 표준어는 아닌데 “꼬시다”라는 말이 있어요.
And while we’re on the topic, although it’s not standard language, there is the word “꼬시다”.
“플러팅하다”랑 굉장히 비슷한 말로 쓰이는 것 같아요.
It seems to be used very similarly to “플러팅하다”.
근데 제 귀에는 “꼬시다”가 더 나쁜 말 같이 들리고 “플러팅하다”는 좀 더 가볍게 들려요.
But to my ears, “꼬시다” sounds like a harsher word, while “플러팅하다” sounds a bit lighter.
“오늘 밤에 클럽에서 남자 엄청 많이 꼬실 거야!” (“I’m gonna hit on and hook up with so many guys at the club tonight!”)
“오늘 밤에 클럽에서 남자한테 엄청 많이 플러팅할 거야!” (“I’m gonna flirt with so many guys at the club tonight!”)
아, 이렇게 말하고 보니까 꼬시는 거는 상대방이 나를 좋아하게 만드는 거고, 플러팅은 그냥 제 마음을 표현하는 거네요.
Ah, saying it like this, “꼬시다” is making the other person like you, while “플러팅하다” is simply expressing your feelings.
마지막으로 저는 연애한지 오래된 아줌마라서 대답이 좀 부족했다면 죄송합니다.
Lastly, since I’m an 아줌마 who hasn’t dated in a long time, I’m sorry if my answer wasn’t enough.
