Looking into “추근대다” and “추근거리다”, the dictionary says these are not dating-related words.
It refers to someone continuously doing a certain action toward someone else to the point of being annoying/bothersome.
To feel “bothered/annoyed,” the subject can’t be an object; it must definitely be a human, or at least an animal, right?
And because of this, I looked through all the dictionaries at home and discovered a shocking fact.
한글 is a phonogram, you know.
So due to the nature of a phonetic script that writes sounds, it is very easy for a word’s spelling to change over time.
On top of that, you’ve probably heard of positive vowels and negative vowels:
negative vowels represent a big, heavy feel, while positive vowels represent a small, light feel.
I will skip the more detailed explanation.
Anyway, what I’m trying to say is: I was so curious where “추근”, the root of “추근대다” and “추근거리다”, even originated from.
So I looked through old dictionaries at home.
As expected, both “초근” and “추근” existed, though “초근” doesn’t seem to be used that much anymore.
But “치근” and “차근” were also there???
And what’s even crazier is that this “치근” is still used with the same meaning to this day??!!
Without even realizing it, I casually used to say “아, 왜 이렇게 치근덕대~” (Why are you pestering me like this.) or “왜 이렇게 추근거려~” (Why are you being so annoying/clingy.)…
I wonder when I even learned all these words, and it’s quite shocking,
and knowing and using all these words with the same meaning is so funny and fascinating,
that I suddenly felt so much respect for all of you learning Korean.
Anyway, while there may be slight nuances, all these words basically stem from the exact same root.
You see him right here, right? He pesters/clings to me every single day. That is the exact moment you use it.
